Consistency Over Intensity
Habit+ Routine+ Consistency = momentum
Stop trying to get it all done in a day.
It’s showing up consistently that builds momentum and not by how hard you go.
One thing I’ve noticed about myself is how it’s not a lack of excitedness or “ginger” that stops me from being consistent.
Naaah. The problem is trying to become an expert the next day I pick up a new skill.
I’ll use learning Spanish as an example.
I decided to learn the Spanish language during the covid 19 period. I got myself a book where I jotted down my learning(tracking of habit) and I promised myself I would study the language for 3 hours daily.
Did I do it?
I did for about a week😂
Then I lost momentum. I got busy. Life happened.
And so, I missed a day, then a day became two, and two days months and now I'm here.
It's not just with Spanish. There are other parts of my life that I had similar issues with.
Like that one time I wanted to learn how to play Chess.
Got the app on my phone last year. Got so excited and played it consistently for a few days till I felt overwhelmed and eventually dropped it.
The lesson here is, it's not the lack of energy sometimes, it's a problem of wrongly directing the energy.
After reading about habits and setting long-term systems around our goals, I've decided to be kind to myself and learn things at a pace I can keep up with.
For instance, taking 10minutes daily to learn a new Spanish word and how to pronounce it.
10minutes sound so small. But I'll let compound interest do its magic😉
N.B: Another thing that’ll help me greatly is incorporating this into my routine.
That’s where setting an alarm comes in.
Setting an alarm for every specific tasks I have.
